I certainly agree that most digital textbooks have been less than impressive. Simply duplicating paper pages in a PDF file does not significantly contribute to the learning experience.

But digital books don't have to be limited to static pages. They can utilize the full power of the personal computer and the Internet to provide a rich learning environment that goes way beyond paper books.

To see what a full-featured digital textbook should be like, visit:

CK-12 has a good idea, but is having a hard time making their business model stick; they have not gone to market in a way that is understood by K-12 textbook consumers, assuming that technology alone will "sell" the model. Also, there is some mystery about their revenue model. How does CK-12 sustain itself?

Joan,

I'm doing research on this right now. I have a 9 year old who reads all the time already and I want to keep her encouraged. She is fascinated with the Kindle. Your study sounds very interesting. My wife is a Composition teacher and we were just talking about this tonight.

Please contact me if you are still interested. We should be able to find some money for 10 kindles. I have both a Kindle and an iPhone with the Kindle software. I've spent a lot of time learning about the amazing Kindle device. I would love to pass this knowledge onto our children.

Thanks,
Steve

I am a Professor and a Reading Specialist. Currently I am teaching reading groups as a teacher/researcher in a high poverty school. The children I work with are 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who lack motivation, lack basic skills, and at this point, have not yet developed a sense of self-efficacy. I am interested in using Kindles to enhance student achievement. My research questions are: 1). What is the effect of the use of the Kindle on the students' motivation to read grade level text? 2). How does the use of the Kindle impact the students' reading levels? and 3). What effect does the use of the Kindle have on the students' sense of self-efficacy? I am hoping that you might consider awarding scholarships for 10 of my students. If this is possible, I would appreciate it a great deal. I am planning on publishing a manuscript on this study in a professional journal. This study is unique and the results need to be publicized.
Thank you, Joan Primeaux, EdD

You should also read Creating Market Disruptions by Adam Hartung - he point out in his book a principal he calls "Lock-in". Many organizations and institutions become successul because when they formed their business or programs they were successful at servicing customers or their public. When the market or conditions change and the institution does not -- this is called "lock-in" He states several examples to demonstrate this but also has a blog that analysizes current situations like banking, airlines and yes education as industries that are locked in.

Huh?

I whole-heartedly agree that teenagers need to read more, but there is nothing in this article explaining how we get there from here because of Kindle.

Are you actually claiming that kids will read more if they have a Kindle? Any proof to back that claim up?

Thanks for bringing attention to this issue. Providing appropriate motivation for adolescent boys to read can be a huge challenge. I noticed you have a link to AdLit.org on your blog roll, and just wanted to emphasize that the site has a wide range of resources for helping parents and teachers encourage adolescents to read and develop important reading skills.
Our Classroom Strategy Library, Ask the Experts section, exclusive booklists and author interviews, and links to articles and research on the most current literacy material in the field are all strong tools that can be used to supplement students' chosen reading material. Hope this helps!

Great post and fascinating comparison to K+E that makes a lot of sense. You've identified the classic signs, too, that a disruption is in the making. Thank you!
